Welcome to Kachemak Pony Club!

Welcome to Kachemak Pony Club from our District Commissioner!

Kachemak Pony Club is a group of dedicated individuals who are interested in safely learning about the world of horses and sharing that knowledge with others. We often gather for mounted events at the Cottonwood Horse Park in Homer during the summer months and work on unmounted horse management skills in the winter.

We operate under the umbrella of the United States Pony Club https://www.ponyclub.org/

They give us the framework and support for all we teach and supply the necessary insurance. The Standard of Proficiency for all our certification levels are built by them with the help of many knowledgeable volunteers. They have also developed the Discipline Rule books for our Pony Club Sports and Rallies. They are the ultimate go-to place for answers to Pony Club questions.

Closer to home is the Alaska Region, which is made up of the six local Pony Clubs in Alaska; Fairbanks, Palmer, Anchorage, Soldotna, Homer and Juneau. The Region helps these clubs plan events that join us all together for a bigger view of Pony Club. Events include Quiz Rally, camps and other discipline rallies. They are a resource of knowledge and problem solving. They also run the National level certifications for HB, C3, etc. The Region has a Regional Supervisor, Secretary, Treasurer, Horse Management Organizer (HMO), Regional Instruction Coordinator (RIC), as well as representatives from every Pony Club.

Kachemak Pony Club here in Homer is run by our sponsors. Every family (if the member is a child) has one parent as a sponsor as well as all the adult members. This group votes in our District Commissioner (DC), Joint. DC, Secretary and Treasurer. We have committees to spread out the load of planning events and educating our members. The more help we have, the more we can do!

Our goal is to provide educational horse experiences for our members, both mounted and unmounted. Working together; adult to adult, adult to youth and youth to youth, builds relationships and strengthens our Pony Club.  The Horse Management skills are the background knowledge that makes how we work with our horses makes sense. Safety is paramount; it guides all that we do both on the ground and in the saddle. Helmets and proper footwear are required for all riders. Horse tack is inspected for fit and quality for the comfort of your equine partner. Instruction is based on riding level, to increase skills but not more than the horse and rider are capable of.

Financially

Annual Dues are paid to each level of Pony Club (our local club, Alaska Region, and National). See the Pony Club FAQ page for updated dues or contact the DC for more information.

Kachemak Pony Club members must also become members of the Kachemak Bay Equestrian Association (KBEA), the non-profit that runs the Cottonwood Horse Park. See the KBEA membership page for more information and a form with prices for joining.

If you are interested in joining us for equine fun and learning, please contact our District Commissioner Melon Purcell at melonpurcell@gmail.com or text 907-299-2519 if you have more questions.
